Samantha's Rescue Journey 3/19: Samantha's Rescue Journey Begins: Samantha is a darling 4-month old puppy who was mauled by 3 pit bulls. Her major wound was to the main muscle in her shoulder; it took 1-1/2 hours to clean the wound and stitch layer after layer after layer to close the wound. Her prognosis for survival is good, but the prognosis for saving her right front leg is guarded, at best. Through all this, any time she was awake, she was wagging her tail and even trying to give kisses to the vet techs while on the operating table. She is one game little girl and we solicit your good thoughts and prayers for this gallant little miss.
3/20: Samantha arrives at a foster home to begin her recuperation. She has been through a horrendous ordeal and several surgeries. Currently, we are optimistic that her leg has been saved. She will always have some nerve damage but does move it and is walking and bouncing. Upon meeting her four large foster brothers and sister, she immediately peed on the floor; from her perspective, they were very frightening indeed!
3/22: Samantha pulled out a few stitches but she's doing very well and is hard to keep down. She's a calm, sweet girl, a great eater, almost housebroken, and loves all the dogs and children in her foster home.
3/26: The major wound reopened and needed to be flushed and rewrapped. Samantha took it all in stride and is back in a new foster home, resting. There is no infection, and she is tolerating the collar. Her appetite is good, and what goes in must come out, which is also working fine. She chose my husband's pillow to pee on this morning, but hey!, it's only 'stuff'. She has a new squeaky toy that she likes, shown in the new pictures of her with her donut collar.
3/29: Samantha is healing so nicely and so quickly that the vet removed all her bandages and wrapping. She still needs to wear her donut and a baby T-shirt to keep it lightly covered. I couldn't think of a better color for her to wear than our own volunteer powder blue. She is truly a remarkable puppy.
3/31: Today Samantha saw a specialist. We learned there is still a chance that she may lose her leg, depending on the amount of nerve damage. She will probably also need a skin graft to completely cover the wound area. Through it all, Samantha still has a warm loving heart. She made friends with every person in the vet's office while waiting for her exam. She still has a long recovery and will not be ready for adoption until we know what her future holds.
4/10: Samantha is currently undergoing hyperbaric oxygen therapy to help the wound heal and aid in the repair of the nerve damage to her leg. This cutting-edge treatment is being done at Pet Emergency Clinic in Thousand Oaks, which is one of the few facilities in this area capable of this type of veterinary care. She usually just sleeps during her 1.5 hour ‘dive’. The wound is responding very well. We are able to do this for Samantha because of a special donation just for this treatment.
4/14: Samantha had a check up today and her wound has healed enough that she no longer needs her donut collar. She does not try to get to the injured area when the donut is off, but will try to scratch the area with her hind foot if I take off the tee-shirt, so that has to stay for awhile.
4/29: Samantha's journey with SCGR Rescue will soon be ending as her journey to her new forever home begins. She has been given a thumbs up to begin the adoption process. She still needs another set of puppy shots and will need to be spayed before final adoption. We have had the good fortune to have many applications from excellent families who would like to adopt her. As her foster mother, I will miss her. She has stolen my heart just like she has with so many of the people she has met, but I know she needs her own forever family. Here are some pictures of her playing with her big foster brother. In her honor we plan to establish a fund to aid with the medical and therapy expenses of seriously injured or ill goldens that we take into SCGR Rescue. We can think of no greater tribute to a young pup who through all the ordeals of her young life has maintained such a sweet and loving spirit. Thank you all for your concern and support. Donations for the medical aid fund to honor Samantha can be made through the PayPal link or by sending a check to our PO Box. |
