About Me
Meet Gia, a true sweetheart looking for a family who will love her forever!
Gia is the ultimate Velcro dog! She loves her humans and desperately wants to be loved in return. Gia follows her humans around the house and even walks off leash at their side. Gia is very comfortable with children and seeks them out. She enjoys lots of kid hugs and is not worried about kid noise or commotion. She is a little skittish in some new situations but is always just the sweetest!
Gia is also very dog friendly. She makes dog friends easily and does not show signs of aggression or discomfort, even with aggressive dogs. She is currently being fostered with another golden, and she loves playing tug and stuffies with him and lying next to him. She previously lived with a cat but she ignored the cat. She is gentle in her play with humans and dogs and is very, very sweet. Gia does not have a mean bone in her body! She is playful but not overly rough. She really enjoys a good game of tug.
While Gia has many strengths, she does need a little help with her manners – particularly as relates to food. Like most goldens, Gia loves her kibble and treats. She is working on developing patience when her food or treats are served (not diving for her bowl). A slow feeder is recommended for Gia. Along these lines, Gia needs to work on counter surfing. If left unattended, she will help herself to any goodies on the counter or dining table. If she sees an opportunity, she will gladly take it!
Gia shows some signs of knowing a few basic commands (particularly sit) but needs more practice. Her recall to “come” is not great, but she really does not leave her humans’ side much, so it is not a major problem. She does occasionally bark at strangers, particularly those wearing hats. This is an area where some improvement and practicing recall/come would be most helpful. She is generally a little shy at first with strangers, but warms up after a minute or two.
Gia would do best in a house where humans are home often – as she really wants to be around people! That said, she is not destructive in the home, so she can be left for a few hours. She does not seem to mind noise or activity and is happy to go to restaurants and stores. She enjoys her walks, but only seems to need light to moderate exercise. She prefers to walk at a more leisurely pace or have shorter walks. She will stop when she gets tired.
She likes the beach (although does not swim much, she seems to be afraid of the waves), and hiking trails, but does not need long distances to be happy.
Having epilepsy, Gia needs medication (roughly 2 pills, fed orally) every 8 hours. At night, she can go 9 hours, but during her time being fostered we have tried to keep her on schedule to avoid any problems. She seems to be responding well to the regular schedule for her medicine, so being able to provide her medication on a timely routine basis is crucial to her health. Her current schedule for medication is 6:30am, 2:30pm, 9:30pm. You must be able to adhere to this schedule should you decide Gia belongs in your life.
My Ideal Home
Gia’s ideal home will be with humans who LOVE her and want the best for her. She is very affectionate and wants to have someone near her always. For a 3 year old dog, she rarely shows any young dog jumping or rough behavior. She loves kids and other dogs. These would be a bonus for her; however, what Gia really wants and needs is someone around that is able to provide her with the love and affection she craves. Gia needs someone that will ensure her health is a #1 priority so Gia can enjoy lots of good pets and cuddles for as long as she can!
