About Me

This beautiful boy is a very special Golden Retriever who has had a rough start in life. He was not treated well in his prior home and was relegated to living/sleeping outdoors. This neglect caused Leif to have some issues surrounding food and fast hand movements. He arrived cowering when you raised your hand or when approached in tight spaces – we believe due to being whacked with a newspaper and no escape route.

During his time with SCGRR, Leif has shown us all his wonderful qualities. After time to decompress, some professional help and extra TLC, Leif has learned to trust again.

Leif LOVES to play and is very eager to engage in fetch, and tug of war. He loves long walks and hikes. Leif enjoys active play such as nose work and agility work – anything that uses his brain. We actually think he is a Field Golden – bred to WORK! So Leif needs physical activity, mental stimulation and will not be happy laying around all day. He would benefit from being enrolled in agility, barn hunting and or other nose work activities and training – all using positive reinforcement, of course!

Leif has done well in play groups and could be either your one and only or in a home with another calm, balanced, well socialized dog. We would not advise cats or other small critters. Leif has met a calm, 9 year old child but given his past concerns with fast hand movements, we are looking for teens and older for Leif.

Leif has been staying in a board and train, and given his past as a yard dog, we do expect a careful transition into a home environment. His family will need to be watchful as they build trust, not corner him and be willing to do a few transition sessions with his current trainer over zoom.

My Ideal Home

Leif will require a family that is very loving, patient and kind. It would be good if multiple family members would like to engage with Leif to get his energy out using only positive reinforcement methods – teenagers and above only. Be prepared for a careful adjustment period as you get to know one another.

Leif will need a large fully fenced yard. Families should research and understand the needs of a Field Golden Retriever and let me know what you will provide for Leif in this regard. Please specify in detail how you can meet all the requirements listed, your training philosophy and exactly what lifestyle you will provide for this very special boy.
